An Ambassador for Christ

Have you ever met an ambassador for Christ?

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Billy Graham for some additional filming for the Billy Graham Evangelical Association’s “My Hope” special broadcast.  They brought myself and a crew up to Dr. Graham’s estate in Montreat, North Carolina for additional portrait shots and coverage (ie B-Roll).

I was honored to be there.  Dr. Graham was very aware of everything going on, but he was tired and had difficulty hearing.  We had a little bit of time with him, and after he returned back to the privacy of his bedroom, one of his caretakers came out and she explained that Dr. Graham had wanted to know more about those of us on the video crew, our families, and how long many of us had worked in our careers and if any of us worked with his son, Franklin Graham.  I think that all took us aback.  We were encouraged that Dr. Graham would take an interest in us, even in his elder state.

How many of us work on production crews and with teams and take them for granted?  Everyone’s got a story, and often, we’re quick to forget that.  We become focused on the work and forget to take a few moments to ask about how people are doing, ask about their families, ask about what they’re most thankful for or what challenges they’re facing.  After all, everyone’s favorite subject is themselves.

The Apostle Paul described his role in ministry in 2 Corinthians 5:20 as an ambassador for Christ.  His calling was to be a messenger representing the King of heaven with the gospel.  Dr. Graham also filled that role.  But he also lived it.  Even later in life, he demonstrated the love of Christ to others, even us filmmakers.

I might one day forget all that was said that day, but certainly I won’t forget the impression Dr. Graham left on me.  May we all be representatives of God to share his love and make others feel valued and appreciated.
